i see many people that are using the 2 little fishes or phasban reactors to run the pellets. i also hear alot of people are having trouble getting the pellets to tumble. is there one reactor thats better than the next.
i was thinking of getting the nextreef since they build quality product but is it worth the premium

I gauss no one has any thoughts. I think I am definitely going to go with the next ref reactor heard nothing but good reviews

I'm running a phosban 550 reactor and my pellets don't tumble... Honestly I think it's the pellets not the
Reactor... YouTube has plenty of videos of tlf reactors with pellets tumbling just

ive got the next reefs and i will never buy them again!
the lid is routed for the oring which makes the lid very flimsy!
perhaps if they had a lid that was thicker than 1/4" it would work, but this makes a very bad seal due to the lid flexing

the regular next reef reactors dont work well for pellets IME. the MR1 reactor i used tended to channel water thru the pellets pretty bad. I switched to a TLF 550 with a MJ1200 and the pellets tumble okay as long as i keep it clean. I never tried the next reef pellet reactor, but i doubt the design is that much different.

I've used the vertex bio pellet reactor & working great for me.
You also need a strong enough pump to get a good tumble

+1 on the next reef SMR1....has the mesh like bottom and top so the water can properly flow and tumble the pellets!

Okay my phosban550 is powered by a maxijet 1200 on full blast the sponges were removed and replaced by mesh and they still don't tumble... Anyone running atb pellets and getting them to tumble that's my question...

get a thinner chamber and run 300+ GPH and they will tumb;e like crazy.

so we got a -1 on nextreef was that the smr1 or the mr1. i thought they designes the smri for the pellets specifically.
the vertex works well. gotta look up those prices now

I am running the Nextreef MR1 shorty that I converted to run EcoBAK pellets tied into another shorty w/carbon and Phosguard on my Biocube 29g. It has been running for a week now and I have a good tumble going with the flow from a RIO 1100 pump.

I have been using the Bulk Reef bio pellet reactor with their own bio pellets. With a maxi jet 1200 it tumbles a lot. I just wonder if we can add too many pellets for a small volume of water?

I just purchased a JNS Alpha BioPellet Reactor and should do a review of it soon. It comes with a pump built in and all you have to do is put it in your sump. Here's a video that someone posted:

I posted earlier on the Next Reef SMR1. I researched this subject too before purchasing, and yes the next reef is a little more bucks....but FWIW, here are my specs...180 reef tank, 40 gall sump/fuge. I run BRS Carbon and GFO and 1000 ML of Ecobak pellets. The SMR 1 is powered by a maxijet 1200 fully opened. I believe you want a gentle tumble, and not a vigorous tumble. I have seen at LFS that sell the pellets and different reactors, and look at their displays and it is obvious the reactor are not reducing nitrates like they are supposed to and I suspect it is because the tumbling is either non-existent or way too fast.

Also, very important, but never really mentioned....The pellets must have a catalyst or a 'food' source.....I dose bacteria (zeo bak) twice a week (one time in tank directly and once in sump directly near intake of bio pellet reactor). I started the reactor from day 1 of tank set up (set up 12/25/10). Yesterday's parameters reading zero nitrates and zero phosphates (both high and low end readings). I have a sps dominant tank with many aquacultured (ORA) and wild colonies and frags and everyone seems happy. I do have a small fuge in my sump where i have 10 llbs of miracle mud and grow cheato, which for sure also helps with nutrient export (I cut back my cheato big time yesterday).

Last, I feed COPIOUS amounts of food to the happy fat fish my tank (4 Tangs, 3 Chromis, 6 Anthias, 2 Cardinals, 2 Dartfish, 3 firefish, 1 fat mystery wrasse).

I use the AVAST reactor for my EcoBak pellets since last August. Works great, gentle tumbling. The acrylic plates hold the pellets in place. You can order a custom size to hold whatever amount of pellets you need.

I was using a modified TLF 150 reactor and was having problems maintaining a consistent fluidized column of pellets using a maxijet 1200. It was also a bit undersized for my applications. Upgraded to the SWC 80 media reactor. Just took the sponges out and she works like a charm. If you start out with too many pellets at one time, they may stick together after a day or two.
