Well, you are adding an organic carbon source to algae in a tank tank with no3 and Po4 , so the scrubber should be happy , yes.

Yea it is a diy, used the ATO that came with my red sea 170 sump. Just drilled a hole inthe bottom, added a bulk head and some pvc for a drain. Heres a pic before I drilled the drain.

Very kool! Ive T'd them off a return as well. My return was in the middle and the scrubber ran down into a refugium. I just cut a slot or long line in the pvc and capped it. I used a ball valve like u but now would use a baby gate valve.

Put two reptile lights on both sides. Ran at the lights at night.
U can make them as long and wide as u want this way.

Oregonic are u in oregon? Curious...hows the algae in the display? I see its good on the scrubber :)
....edit or btw i use a ruff sand paper or even a ruff rock and scratch the screen up.

I roughed up the mesh as well. I only really get algae in the display on top of my gyres, none on rock work and have a very small clean up crew. Yup live in Portland Or.

Here it is in action. I have cut the screen shorter since I first setting it up. I now have about 2 inches of water in bottom with Marine Pure spheres and rubble for pods to grow. I pick out algae that grows in there when I clean the screen. This has really allowed my pod population to boom.
