Amazing news for all the mandarin lovers out there! 🎉You asked for it, and now, for a limited time only, we have larger Biota captive-bred Mandarin fish available! These beauties are averaging about 1" long, and they’re already trained to eat @reefnutrition TDO B2 pellets, frozen brine shrimp, and frozen Calanus 🐛🍤It takes us an extra 3 months (and a lot more grow-out space) to raise them to this size, so grab yours while they last. We still have our classic ¾" size in stock too, but if you’ve been waiting for a bigger mandarin… we’ve got you covered 💙🐉🔗 thebiotagroup.com

For the B2 pellets, how do you suggest feeding these guys (I have a 3/4" one) in tank? Turn off the flow and let the pellets fall in front of them? Leave the flow on and let the pellets move where they will? Put the pellets in some sort of feeder?

Thanks!

At our facility we turn off flow and drop feeds from the surface allowing them to sink to the substrate and then siphon up anything uneaten after about 30 minutes. With more aggressive eaters I would recommend a pippete or turkey baster to get the food down to them.

How often are you feeding the pellets? Is this still a multiple time per day recommendation?

I will say in my experience that fat mandarins are happy mandarins. Anytime I've seen one start to get even kind of thin they die.

I don’t feed any pellet food.

I added pods when I first started in December. I feed frozen every morning.

I'd really like a response....
Apologies, we try to check R2R as often as possible. We recommend a few times a day (at least 2-3) but we feed 4-5 because we're also fattening them up and growing them out. They hunt throughout the day so giving them small frequent feeds is usually better for them.

I have a Biota Manderin now for a couple years in a 180g. Tiny when received but has grown very quickly. Eating pellets from day one. (I was using the tiny TDO, and bene pellets) I used an acclimation box and on day 2 was eating small pellets immediately. (and anything frozen) I've had mixed luck with wild mandarins in the past. They can't outcompete for frozen or pellets with many larger fish in the water column. (or the don't even want to eat prepared dry foods at all)

One thing I'll say in general about Biota fish: They eat right away (in an acclimation box or small QT space) and you can observe them easily. Usually TDO, Benepets pellets, anything small and frozen they can fit in their mouths they'll eat. If they are healthy when they arrive to you (however you procured them) they will be eating. And the risk you bear is more about the tank you put them in and inhabitants.

My baby biota manderin was released into a tank with many aggressive fish and did well. Manderins don't get attacked or beat up on (in general) and can hide well. And don't get aggressive with other fish either. They're awesome and perfect for any reef tank IMO.

Awesome for you guys listening to the community, what are your plans for christmas island captive bred emporer angels?

Bali Aquarich currently is the company breeding the emperor angelfish we sell but I don't believe there are plans to stock Christmas island phenotype into that breeding program. There isn't a ton of collection so getting broodstock would likely be more difficult
