Blotched anthias - yes or no ?

Ha Ha ! Not sure yet. I have to talk to the guy. He recovers fish from people breaking down their tanks and I think it’s one of those. It’s apparently a female, probably an adult. So I want to find out if she stays in the open or not and why the owner is rehoming her. I’ll try to bring the price down a bit too.


Yeah, I told myself no more. But this fish caught my attention years ago and it’s kind of a dream fish. I rehomed a foxface recently so this one would take its place, sort of, but it’s a lot smaller.


They get fed twice a day wit frozen and they all get their share. No aggression at feeding time. The only one that’s scared of the others is the firefish. I have to make sure to send food it’s way or it wouldn’t eat. I was hoping to rehome it but couldn’t catch it.

I hope the fish isn't too upset from being moved around. You may be its best shot at a nice life?

I think with a lot of these deepwater fish, maybe we’re not getting the full lifespans out of them, due to how they’re caught. Borbs are the shallow water ones in their genus, and I’ve seen diving videos from Japan where they’re found at 120-150 feet off the main islands, so still a relatively deepwater fish by most standards, but not like unreachable to the point where only a few from specific institutions can reach them (think Cal Academy). When Jay did a write-up on the Sacura and estimated a potential lifespan of at least 15 years if kept in good conditions, I believe a larger and less typical schooling Anthias like the Blotched (Borbonius), is nearly or of that potential. If I had to take a guess, I think 12-13 years, up to 15, would be possible. We just don’t get to see that a lot due to what I guess are still collection issues. I hope Biota breeds them again and in commercial quantities. They’ve done it with the Cuban Gramma and Rainfordia, which is arguably a notch up in rarity and $$.

I do wonder, how long some of the Japanese collectors have had their uber rare deepwater fish. Many of which hardly if ever make it to North America. I believe, it would be hard not for at least some of them to be quite old by now, as in over a decade.

I’ve decided to pass. The fish has to be ordered from Los Angeles so it’s not a rehome, and not an adult. This is making it a lot riskier and less interesting.

Also, I was looking at my tank and it wouldn’t be fair to my existing fish. I feel there isn’t enough room. Maybe one day, if there is a natural death in the tank.

I live near LA. If I ever have a reason to travel to Canada (I was invited to participate in the up coming election) I will try to pick up a solid specimen and gift you one. I have no doubt it would survive well in your care.

I have two, one larger and one smaller. I’ve had them since January. Ordered from Jersey Corals. They stay out all the time. My PAR is 400-500. I did have a harem of 5 Lyretails I re-homed because the male was picking on the larger blotchy. I replaced that harem with Evansi anthias. No aggression issues now.

I don’t think lighting is an issue that much with them I have one and I love it it used to hide in the back of my tank but after about a month or so it started to come out and now it’s always in the front of my tank swimming around really beautiful fish probably my favorite at the moment wanted one for a long time I remember in like 2014 thinking man I wish I could get one of those and 10 years later I got one and I couldn’t be happier I’ve had mine for about a year and a half I even moved and switched it to a new tank so I would say they’re pretty hardy mine eats pellets at first it didn’t but that’s all I feed and he eats the pellets now more than any fish in my tank

Just got my anthias, a dream fish for me. She ate the first day (came out of the corner where she was hiding), including pellets. It’s a week now and she’s definitely coming out as soon as I stand by the tank, so this fish has a strong desire to eat haha. She loves all food.
I don’t feel the lights are an issue; she just cruises around the more shaded areas as I have plenty of rock. She’s about 1 1/4” not including the tail. Love her. Very intelligent & active fish.
I have an established Sunburst anthias in the tank and although they swim in the same area, ignore each other.

I got one about 3 months ago from Harry’s marine life for 250. They had 30 or so to choose from, all sizes. Highly recommend. He thinks he’s hot **** and sometimes chases the wrasses but the copperband keeps him in check. He’s establish an interesting relationship with my sunburst anthias, they often “dance” or swim with each other like a pair of clowns. I named him Gizmo

He (she?) is one of two in my tank. They are the reason I got into the saltwater hobby (yes I am one of those dummies who trusted the LFS saying they were freshwater). In the new year, it will be their 10 yr anniversary with me. They have been model citizens and such great fish
