Hi everyone.

I'm wondering if I should add a longnose hawkfish to my 250 gallon tank. I love them but I have read that they can kill shrimp and small fish. I don't care if my skunk cleaner ends up as food as I rarely see it anyway, but I would hate for it to kill some of my not so big fish. Here is my current and planned stocking:

Angel Emperor
Powder Blue Tang (In Quarentine)
Copperband butterflyfish (Already in tank)
Lyretail Anthias (Already in tank)
Green Chromis (Already in tank)
Randall Goby
Royal Gramma (Already in tank)
Clownfish (Already in tank)
Mandarin Dragonet
Banggai Cardinalfish (Already in tank)
McCoskery Flasher Wrasse
Red Headed fairy Wrasse
Yellow Coris Wrasse
Black Leopard Wrasse (Already in tank)

So for those that had it, how likely it is that it goes on a murdering rampage?

Thanks.

I am not 100% convinced it will kill those fish but may harass them when competing for food. I would be more concerned with it wiping out you CUC. I have a Flame Hawkfish with great personality but he does eat small snails in the tank so i avoid them and replace CUV with bigger snails.

I have a long nose hawkfish in quarantine right now. I also have adult peppermint shrimp and skunk cleaner shrimp, both bigger than the long nose hawk fish. I have done extensive research on whether they will get along or not.
I feed my long nose hawk fish a rotation of mysis shrimp, angel cousine and predator food that has clam, oyster, shrimp and squid. Chat gtp suggested that if I feed predator food and keep the fish full then the hunting instinct will be less.
Whenever I walk by the aquarium my hawkfish begs for food. I've spent March feeding frozen meaty food to her hoping that when she moves to my display tank she won't think the big shrimp are her welcome dinner.

I have a longnose hawk and he pretty much stayed perched on a rock looking over the tank it never went after my cleaner or fire shrimp to big for it to waste his energy also depends how much you feed if it eats well or if he’s noting getting in the scrum you should drop food on one side then spot feed it hungry fish will go after a peppermint shrimp if it’s a smaller one and hawk is full grown. If you worried about shrimp the flake hawks are really nice to not as pretty as the longnose but more personality IMO but the biggest thing with a long nose have to have a cover they will commit suicide usually when another bigger fish punks him.

I have a Longnose Hawk and Flame Hawk in a 150, with a half-dozen Butterfly Fish. As you know, the Hawks basically have no 'swim bladder', so they glide and perch around from rock to rock. I checked out your list of fish -- I can't imaging either Hawk bothering your fish, especially if kept properly fed in a proper size tank. I think you will love it.

I have had no problem with fish, but mine will kill snails and crabs,
I have a small long nose hawkfish. She's a model citizen and spends her days judging me for not feeding her and her friends as much as they'd like me to. It might be because I've eaten tuna sushi in front of the aquarium.
She's never stalked my peppermint shrimp or skunk cleaner shrimp. It helps they're bigger than she is.

I love mine and it’s a model citizen so far. Doesn’t bother anyone and I have a large CUC. Tank is well fed and he just hangs out from place to place. 180 gallon tank.

When friends come to visit, the Longnose is always getting noticed/a crowd pleaser!
Yup. They are very front and center fish. Mine doesn’t even care when I have my hands in the tank. Doesn’t even move from where it’s perched.

I used to have a pair of long nosed hawkfish. Great fish to watch and be watched by. They did try to eat any small blennys like Smiths, Harptail, ect… they would chase and try to eat. Never had a problem with them going after shrimp.
