blue legged hermit shed?

So I woke up this morning to find swaying legs of what looked like my hermit crabs legs. To investigate more I noticed that it was literally like a shell of my entire hermits body. I assumed it was dead. An hour later I went back and spotted both my hermit crabs alive and in their shells.

I am really confused what happened as I was really close to throwing out the shell. Luckily I didn't.
