Just had some questions. I used marine glo actinic bulbs for a long time many years ago. I really liked them. They grew less algae I liked how they made things look. With eyeware and computers and smart phones people are subjected to more blue light than ever. My eye glasses have the coating to protect my eyes from it. I read that it isn't really bad for fish except if more than12 hours per day. But I also read the some goldfish had their retina cells destroyed by it. I had a hybrid cichlid years ago and I was using a Wavepoint four bulb flourescent with all blue actinics. They hybrid cichlid went blind inexplicably one day. I never had that happen before. It was a beautiful fish. Many factors could have contributed to this but if blue light is bad for us could it also be bad for fish? At the time I did not blame the light. But reading an article today I wonder it that had been it. I have kept fish for many years. And that was the first time one ever went blind. Obviously actinic blue makes things beautiful in the tank. I use them now. It can supress melatonin in people if too much after sunset I read. Which interferes with our sleep. Blue light from the sun is fine. Even beneficial. But from cell phones, computers, tv and lights it can be too much. I am going to use less blue.

Blue and UV are common spectrums and needed. It’s one with the kelvin counts you don’t want to stare out and one that brings out the vivid colors
There is no way we can begin to imagine color under pure white light

Quite wrong in fact. Blue is blue, it doesn’t matter what the source is. Excessive sunlight without eye protection long term will roast your retina far quicker than a cell phone will.

The real thing is exposure over time. Don't run the lights too long during the day and you'll be fine. I run mine from Noon to 9pm with a ramp hour at both ends. After keeping fish for 10-15 years (with a variety of lights) I've never had a fish lose eyesight on me.

The issue with blue light from phones/screens/etc. isn't so much the light itself, but more the fact that most people go from staring at screen to screen, and we do it all day long and well after sunset.

I'm assuming this is about human eyesight as I'm struggling to find blind fish?
My mum used to warn me about sitting to close to t.v. although it was probably 10" big, same as not watching the microwave? 20 years ago.
I'm sure all aquatic life are good with lights we provide otherwise we will all have blind invertebrate and fish?
That would be a crazy aquarium to watch

….and fish are subject to light levels hundreds of times higher in the wild than they receive in our tanks. The blue light from aquarium lighting is not hurting anyone. This thread and others like it are examples of poorly interpreted information. I don’t mean that to be ugly or an insult. Just the truth

I guess its rare that the blue light blinds fish. With people one of the issues is that blue light after sunset (computers, phone, flourescents) supresses your body's ability to make melatonin. So this leads to sleep loss which leads to problems. I did have a fish go blind. I was running all blue (4 t5s). It was a hybrid fish. A Dragonblood peacock cichlid. It was the only one I ever had trouble with. I can't blame the light either. But I just read the article about goldfish losing sight. Fish obviously can't tell you if the blue is stressful. I had all Marine Glo on several Cichlid tanks and no blindness ever. I am just asking because the brilliance the blue provides makes me not want to ask if it might be harmful (too much of it).
