Picked up a blue sponge at the LFS for free.

I thought I would give it a try. The price was about right.

But of course now that I read about them on R2R I'm not sure it's a very good idea.

I have a good overhang where it won't get too much light BUT now I'm thinking it might not be a good idea at all?

Any thoughts or experience on keeping a blue sponge?

It's a mature mixed reef with acro's, monti's, clams, etc...

Should I give it a try or just say goodbye?

Good flow very little light, give it a good try.... sounds like you have experience. It has its best chance with an experienced reefer....

With that being said I have a deep blue / purple sponge that is photosynthetic and plating.... it grows like a weed...

Got pics?

Are you worried about something specific?

I think one of the keys in their survival is how they are handled. If I remember when we had them at the LFS I worked at we tried hard to not expose them to air. Back then there were folks setting up refugiums with sponges and nearly no light b/c they were filter feeders and basically screening particulate out of the water.

Not sure what the word is nowadays though...

Mine are exposed to air every time I do a water change and it doesn’t bother them at all.

Will post a pic tomorrow when the lights come on. Definitely not plating.
