Hello guys!

Blue tang was treated for marine ich and has been in my QT waiting for the fallow period to be over. She was doing fine until this morning. (30 days in 2,5 ppm copper power, almost 2 months without any symptoms of illness after QT)

I noticed this white looking patch and her tailfin looks damaged. Only other fish in the QT is a clownfish. No agression. They are still eating and active. I did notice a part of her tail on one side only which has some dark spots (not uniform).

Is this Bacterial? Fungal?

Medication available in my collection:

kanaplex
Metroplex
Paraguard
Rubby rally reef
Copper power
Esha trimarin
Tremazol (praziquantel)

I have a second Qt running, do I get the clownfish out of the tank or leave it in not to contaminate the fish in my QT2?

Actions I have taken since I noticed the symptoms: 70% WC where I noticed my basic filter was broken and heater did not receive proper flow (water was around 23 celsius instead of 25). Added a powerhead for circulation, temp back to normal.

The tail show either fin rot , aggression or bacterial issue. Lower copper to 2.25 as Ive seen more than once skin issues at higher copper levels. Have you been monitoring ammonia levels during quarantine? If so, how are you monitoring it?

Copper has been removed for 7 weeks now. Ammonia has always stayed near 0 using a hanna checker.

I can not completely rule out aggression, however not a sign of aggression from the tang of clown has been observed by day and during my checks at night.

In combination with the white lump I tend to lean towards a bacterial problem. Eyes are not cloudy, general colouration is good and the fish is active and eating. Breathing normally.

As he is still in a “good” condition for the moment I would like to start a treatment with Antibiotics and see how it reacts. Would you think it is a wise idea to dose kanaplex and metroplex for gram positive and negative? Or would kanaplex only be sufficient? (Can’t get furan2 here in Europe)

I think that is mucus produced as a reaction to some injury. The tail fin also looks like an injury.

What other fish are in the same tank with it?

Skip Metro and Kanaplex is a good choice. These fish are susceptible to skin issues and plays a role here and clown would be a prime suspect with tail nipping if not rot

There is a clownfish in the quarantine with the blue tang,

Sorry, I missed that. Well, that's unlikely to be an issue unless the clown is larger. They can be very sly though, while you are in the room, they are on their best behavior.

I would treat this with an antibiotic. The kanaplex you have would be a good choice.

Thanks for the advice! I will start a treatment with kanaplex and will try to arrange an isolation box in the tank to physically separate them. In case it is agression the tang should recover and in case it is bacterial, they are both in treatment!
