Books from back in the day. Bought another.

After buying an old Tunze skimmer fir a song recently and waiting delivery, this time I couldn't resist a book from yesteryear.
Reef secrets by Authors: Nilsen, A. J. & Fossa, Svein A. From 2003. Lots of books were quite expensive back in the day now cheap as chips in good condition secondhand on the bay.

Cheap for a reason of course but much of the information still very relevant. I do like a book in my hand and this is a book I was always going to buy but never did. At £3.97. Uk pounds, in VGC including postage it would be rude not to.

With the surge in the Internet I don't recall a book being published since Albert Thiels (RIP) book on Nano Reef Aquariums in 2013. Albert was strongly advised to too but went ahead anyway. I wrote a section in it on Oxydator's.

I have quite a few books from back in the day many are up in the loft I have to say. Only reason they are up there is I don't have anywhere else to store them. They do come out from time to time.

I like the Reef Aquarium series by Julian Sprung & Charles Delbrick. I had all three copies at one time. I can’t find them now.

“It would be rude not to buy it.”

That is too funny and a fitting comment for a “distinguished gentleman”.

PS: I recall a quote from Martin Moe at his first marine aquarium conference in early 1970’s, not long after the USA had landed a man on the moon,

“Reef biology is not rocket science, its more complicated”.

Martin was trying to breed flame angels but was having trouble keeping them beyond a few weeks. A food issue I believe. A friend of mine had bred C. argi bringing a few through. Martin was of course very interested in how he managed to do so. Also at the conference we're Julian Sprung. Forest Young and Albert Thiel, the plus one or 2 more I forget. What a weekend that was.

It sounds like that weekend had a lot of distinguished Reef-Folks assembled.

I do wonder what the future looks like as books (written form of knowledge that is not easily editted) would seem to be replaced with videos?

Yep YouTube videos. However. They can also go out of date and even give poor advice. I have a YouTube channel but it's not purely a marine based one and I don't preach on how people should keep their marine aquarium. My marine aquariums on it were more as a diary which I find helpful than for others.

They can be had very cheaply and in VGC for a fraction of their original price on eBay. Some places are asking sky high prices for such books, some on Amazon for instance.

I am old and a little cranky but I feel sometimes that the pace of information from creation to editing to being outdated is at too fast a pace. Anyone can create it or critique it, qualified or not. Books took time, therefore investment, which somewhat ruled out the outliers/ crackpots.
