Chances are that's just a dead frag covered In it. I have seen it plate before though.

Branching coralline is a real thing. Seen it many times while diving. Looks like you got some, nice!

I have some growing on a rock and just found this little piece on the sand. Purple all the way through, no calcium skeleton.
