I have Seachem Matrix which I would use, but have not had a need yet. I believe @Rakie uses the same. It is a highly porous bio media.

Seachem matrix is my favorite media,and the one I advise fir everybody to get.

I have 3L in my tank, which is way more than enough.

I also just took a picture of my sponge garden for someone, happens to show my matrix.. if you aren't using sponges, I also advise it. You can get sponges very cheap. Just make sure to get non photosynthetic ones that don't need light.

Ok I have a dumb question. Do people include total water volume (sump) when people ask what size tank you have? I would only use DT volume. Am I wrong?

Depends how the question is phrased.

"How many gallons is your system"

"How big is your tank"

+1 but I would add that if a muggle (non-reefer) asked me I would say total volume. Sounds more impressive. ;)
