I think it’s like a prehistoric snail stopper or something. I’m not totally sure.

You can try and add an air line tubing from the hole in the durso cap to just under the water when the return is running. that why when the return pump is not running the air line is above water level and will kick start the siphon, and when the air line go underwater when the system is running will act like a full siphon.

You will nee 2 valve on each drain and return to fine tune until the sound is somehow acceptable .

I agree with this, right here! I prefer to hear water sounds than what I normally hear. Unfortunately, I always hear noise in my ears (tinnitus). It's also one reason why I like going to sleep listening to certain music made in different frequencies such as 432Hz, 528Hz, 852Hz or a combination. Binaural and bilateral music are also good. If you've never tried them, I suggest them for relaxation. Oh, and use headphones when listening for full effect. Fortunately, the sound I constantly hear is just a low static sound and not ringing. I've been told it was probably caused by too many concerts. Seeing The Who multiple times inside the 10th row probably didn't help!
