I haven't had a tank up and running for a number of years, but have quite a bit of experience with Malawi Haps and Peacocks. I have ZERO saltwater or reef experience.
My wife asked me to set up our old 75 gallon so our 3 kiddos (4, 3, 2) could enjoy it. I have always wanted to try a reef tank and she gave me the ok.
I am starting with my old 75 gallon and stand. Tank is drilled high in the back left (I had a sump on it years ago), but I have it capped right know. In the future when I have more cash, and a compelling need, I will likely add a sump, overflow box etc. It shouldnt be difficult to s long as I can leverage the existing hole.
In the mean time I am working everything HOB. I have a reef octopus 1000 classic HOB and an aquaclear 110 which mainly for activated carbon. I may fill it with rubble for pods.
Tank has 80 lbs of sand, 80 lbs dry rock, and 5 lbs live rock from Pruess Pets here in Michigan. For flow I have an icecap gyre 3k and 2 small koralia powerheads. Besides that I have two Kessil A360WE lights with specter controller and a tunz osmillator ato.
Tank has had saltwater in it for a month and is cycled. We added clean up crew this weekend. I have 6 scarlet hermits, 4 trochus snails, and 6 astrea snails. I have seen pods too so I am feeding phyto feast to hopefully build them up.
I tried to invest where it made sense and wait on things that are nice to have someday.
Here are some pics.
