I have been told it is due to different types of bta's. Personally, I believe tank conditions are the primary factor as people have bought a bta at a store only to have it lose the bubble tips after a period of time.

From my experience with BTAs, all parms being equal, I would say it has to do with lighting...here's my experience.

I've had a BTA in my main tank for almost 3 yrs now, but it rarely ever bubbles up and even when it does, it doesn't look fully bubbled up. It has split multiple times, when I take the clones out of the main tank and put them in my other tank under LED's within a few days they are fully bubbled up and the colors are very bright....the one in my tank looks like an LTA, dull colors. The 2 tanks are connected together, so the parms are the same, the only difference is the lighting...bubbles up under LED, does not bubble up under my T5 (not to say this would be the experience under all T5s or all tanks, just my experience).

I don't think it has to do with the strength of the light either, I've sold the clones, one time it split in 3. one guy had T5, one had strong MH. The one with the T5 bubbled up the one with MH did not...I don't know what their parms were.

What I did learn (also from experience) is that anemones are much stronger than we think. I recently had a clone go into a PH and all the bubbles got ripped off, it looked like it was dead, water got very cloudy...I throw it in my sump and within a week it had new bubbles.

Here's another one for you....while trying to get a clone out of my main tank, I ended up having to cut sections of it's leg off with a knife because it was so deep in a rock...the 2 pieces of it's leg that stayed behind were about an inch apart...they came together and formed a new anemone, it's still in my DT. I have a thread on it somewhere, I'll try to find it.

interesting observation. I have t5s as well.
i plan on putting together a DIY led fixture and hopefully things may change for my bta.

As a test, I put one of my LED PAR30 bulbs over the anemone in my main tank, the next day it bubbled up so in my case I'm sure it's the lighting.
