I just replaced my API test kit with Hanna checkers. My calcium and magnesium are both high. I used Reef Crystals for my salt. Looking to change to Tropic Marine on my next salt purchase.

Here are my numbers

Calcium: 495
Magnesium: 1730
Alkalinity dKH: 11.2
Nitrate HR: 11.9
Phosphate ULR: 0.16

Tank is about 4 months old. Just got a couple of coral this week. 4 Octospawn heads and some Yuma and Zoa. 2 Clowns, 1 Coral Beauty, 6 Blue Green Chromies, a cleaner shrimp and misc snail/crab cleanup.

I was watching the BRSTV video about Calcium and Magnesium, and I think h said Calcium is toxic above 500 so I am a bit worried.

I hope they didn’t say that. It’s so very obviously untrue. if they did say it, it’s another reason to not get information from them. Some salt mixes start above 500 ppm.

Your calcium is fine. Even 550 ppm is fine.

To clarify what they claimed, they said toxicity is likely above 500 ppm. What they presumably meant is that toxicity kicks in likely somewhere above 500 ppm, like 10,000 ppm is above 500, not that they were claiming that 501 ppm is toxic (it isn’t).

It was a poor choice of words, but I’m sure they did not mean to imply that 501 ppm is known to be toxic.
