Calling all you gun lovers!

Hey guys so I've really been looking into getting a rifle lately and seeing what's good for the price and what not and I want to see some of your guys feedback. I have narrowed down my search to the smith and Wesson m & p sport 2 and the Ruger Ar-556. This will be my first gun I will own although this won't be my first time shooting one. Who out there owns either gun? Tell me what you think of them.

Both companies are good manufactures so you can't go wrong with either. Your best bet would be to go and hold both of them. See which feels more comfortable to hold with your own body attributes. Whichever feels the best to you get that one. What one person likes may not be the same for you.

Mainly target practice and hunting.

m&p is direct gas impingment and the ruger is piston driven. The pros for the ruger are that it will run cleaner and will run cooler. Pros for the S&W are that DGI are more common, cheaper, are usually better with suppresors, and are known to recoil a litter better. Overall both are good but I would lean more to the S&W.

Why not get an AR-15? You are not doing anything but hunting small game with a 5.56 nato. An AR-15 will be more fun target shooting. But if your set on your two selections then go for it! Absolutely nothing wrong with them. This is assuming your getting one of those rifles in 5.56 nato/.223. Just so you know you if you already didn't can shoot .223 out of a gun that's chambered to shoot 5.56 nato. Not the other way around putting a 5.56 nato in a gun chambered only to shoot .223 the gun will blow up.

I would pick the sr-556 over both. Unfortunately it's a little out of my price range and may be a little much for my first gun haha.

And yea that's what I was talking with the guy at the gun store about. He was saying for not that much more you could go with the Ruger and it has a few things that would just make life a little easier.

That's a nice looking gun man. Little out of my price range too. The 700 range is good for me because I will still need to spend a pretty penny in optics.

Don't get me wrong I absolutely love sig I have their p320c pistol which was reasonably priced. It's just their guns call for a premium price but worth every penny if you wanna fork that kind of money over for one.

I like the m&p. Here's a couple shots of the one I got for my wife. The scope on it is a Barska sniper scope. Pretty slick little scope for the price. Not really made for durability from what I've read but if you treat the gun good, it should hold up. I like the m&p for the price point. No experience with the Ruger to compare. If you happen to be military, the exchanges always have these at a good price. When I bought hers it was 599.00 regular, with 15% off. With the scope, it came out to right around 600.00.
