I tend to lean towards action shooting so if I were buying something new on the high end (of mass produced) I would get a Colt, DPMS, S&W, Rock River etc. but there are a million options of what to buy ranging from cheap to expensive. Personally I would recommend a reasonable model of a flat top (w/ or w/o carrying handle just as long as removable), see how you like it and customize it to taste. AR's are so easy just about anyone can work on them. Just pay attention to the type of barrel (heavy, heavy match, medium, light etc.) and get something with probably a 1:8 twist in 5.56 NATO so you can shoot just about anything other than some of the really heavy rounds. Buying something like that gets you at least a matched lower and upper together with a bolt head spaced properly to your barrel to start with. Mixing and matching parts doesn't always work out that well and if you just want a plinker its going to be cheaper to just buy one and then customize.

My current goto gun started out a $1000 Olympic ML-1 probably 10 years ago and has undergone a number of face lifts. The only catch on the heavy match barrel on mine is its 223 Rem and 1:10 so I don't shoot anything more than about 63g in .223 Rem. I have an Eotech but usually use the Vortex Razor HD Gen II 1-6x24 gets used. Awesome scope/red dot even if heavy and $$. With that scope, barrel and forearm it weighs about 12 pounds (as much as an M14) but its dead accurate, target or otherwise, and will ping a small steel plate all day at 300yrds. Add some Federal Fusion 62g 223 and its lights out for wild pigs

This is as tacticool as it gets :)
You know I was just sitting here looking at this again and I realized all that extra stuff you get with that gun. Is the scope worth a crap or...?

I think when it comes to ar's it's all about your budget. Of its small get the cheapest one youarea can find and see how you like the hobby. If your in to it just start up grading part by part (not adding parts but upgrading ) before you know it you'll have enough parts laying around to have 2 ar's

I have the m&p sport. The one without the forward assist and dust door. Great solid rifle. I've built a few from a 6.8 with Wilson Combat match grade components to a fun little Adams Arms ar pistol with a bio hazard aimpoint.

Steer clear of the beretta arx series. I had many jams and misfired rounds out of mine. Got rid of it a week after having it and only 2 range trips. May have been a bad build, but I was in no way happy with mine. (Read a few posts so don't even know if this was an option, just thought I'd throw it out there though)

I don't do beretta anymore after a misfire from a 22 neos? Caught me in the thigh when loading a round into the chamber it fed wrong crimped the case and pop

I came close to buying a m and p sport 2 tonight but I walked around the store for a few minutes and thought about it and I a)knew I could get the gun cheaper than what I saw then and b)really wanted to wait for a Ruger as they didn't recieve any today and only get shipments every Friday. But thanks to you I have found cdnn which not only has a great deal on the Ruger ar-556 but you also get all the free stuff (I mean who doesn't like free stuff right?)! The only thing I wasn't sure of is does all that free stuff they give you come already on the gun or do you have to put it on yourself? Also if it is already put on, do they still give you the stock gun parts?

They don't give you the stock gun parts and I'm not sure about if it comes out together like bipod scope ect. Cdnn is good stuff fast shipping easy to work with and great prices.

Side note I'm about to build a few rifles. A 12" 556, 8" 300blk, 14.5" 308 and deciding between a 6.5 or 6.8 for the last one.

As far as is the scope worth a crap I'm sorry sure but I can tell you my Larue OBR has a set of scope rings on it that cost as much as that whole package. It's all in what you want though.

Do you want a gun you can take to the range a handful of times a year go hunting a handful of times a year or do you want something you're going to use weekly at the range/ hunting and want to push yourself to see how good of a shot you can be.

I know my OBR can out shoot me but I hope to get on its level one day.

I want to get an AR and go shoot hogs from a helicopter. There is actually an industry for that. It looks really fun!

While I am not a gun nut, don't hunt (unless I am being hunted) or target shoot (I live in New York) I wanted to share this 38 round magazine I built in Viet Nam for my M-16. Only gun nuts would appreciate it so I put it on this thread.
The M-16 normally comes with an 18 round magazine but the AK-47s used a 22 round magazine. So I felt gypped and built this. Keep in mind I was in a jungle and had nothing to work with except crashed helocopters and a rusty pliers. It worked very well and allowed me to fire the entire thing fully automatic. Of course then it would get so hot I had to wrap an empty sand bag around the barrel to hold it.

Is it to control the population?

Yes. Usually the owners of the land pay people to do it. They are destroying the land and property. Apparently they can reproduce at 6 months of age, and it is becoming a problem.
