I am looking at the Nikon d5600. I like them because you are able to use all Nikkor lenses so the options are great. It also works with a macro lense that is recommended on the forum about photography here on R2R. For about 600 bucks on ebay with lots of accessories. This is a great post that explains a lot and was very helpful.

Budget? It helps to know what you want to spend..

It’s like asking, what truck should I get to haul lumber that won’t break the bank and still haul allot? What size engine and tires?

You don’t need a DSLR. A mirrorless can do the job as well.

This will be for tank only pics.
I could spend 2K but dont want to just for the tank.
I dont need the best as I would rather spend it on the tank.
With that, is their any decent used ones for around $300 that are worth the price.
Also, I know almost nothing about cameras so looking for some direction.
Was told I need a dslr by a local guy into cameras and reefs.

If you want a cheap camera just use your phone. I use my iPhone 7 with an Ice cap lens. This is the best method I’ve used so far to work on my reef photography! Really nice cause you don’t have to do all that uploading and transferring stuff

You will be unhappy with any camera you purchase without the skills needed to take high quality shots. Meaning, the camera, while an important part of the equation, is only a small part.

Find a local camera club or take some classes at the local community college and you'll be much better equipped to understand the question you asked.

Nothing worse than dropping 2k on a bunch of gear and turning out lousy pictures. (I have done it)

I've been a photographer for over 30 years. I still suck at fish photos. But, I'm still learning and practicing.

Like @footgal gal said, your phone can do a good job if you practice at it.

Its been a year but I just purchsed the IceCap macro lens kit you recommended. All I can say is thanks! It turned out better than I could have imagined. It took me a year to get it though, lol.
Here is a few pics with it attatched to my android. Thanks again!

Which phone do you use? This is a pic of one of my montis purely using the default pro mode on a Samsung galaxy S9. Adjusted a few settings and this is straight out of the camera, no post processing. Not professional but certainly excellent for a phone.
