I purchased this guy about a week ago. It's my most expensive coral yet so I REALLY don't want to lose it. I've got 2 other acanthos that are a lot smaller that are doing fantastic. I've got it in the lowest light/flow part of my tank (right next to the other acanthophyllia) and it's just not doing good. I have quite a bit of SPS so I have to keep the flow moderate but I've turned it down quite a bit since this guy started showing stress. I just don't know what else I can do and I feel like I'm watching it die day by day. Can anyone give any advise/suggestions?

I included pictures of what it looked like when I first added it to my tank and what it looks like now and also what it looked like at the store.

Peramaters at last testing on December 25th
Alk: 9.8
Po4: .03
Mag: 1395
Cal: 485
Salinity: 1.024

Any chance a tang took a nip or two at it and is stressing it out?

Otherwise I don't have enough experience with them to find the answer...

Sorry that happened, it looked like a gorgeous coral. I have no advice except to watch the flow on it, I had to move mine out of my main tank into my softie tank, there is just too much flow in my main tank. Even in the softie tank, I have it behind a rock to protect it, it really hates flow.

Not much help but mine is my most expensive coral also. I watched it in the LFS for nine months before I made an offer on it.
Mine did fine in my SPS tank, 36x24x24" 2 MP40s, 2 MP10s, and 2 Nero 5s under 2 reefbreeder photon 32s so they can definately take some flow and light, at least mine did. I have had other fleshy LPS be tank finicky. Thrive in one tank deflate and look bad for months in another tank while other LPS did great in there. Moved them back to the original tank and they fully inflate within 24 hours after being returned. Similar parameters and lighting so I don't know why they prefer one tank over the other. Nothing picking at them so it's another coral mystery.

I do have a fox face that has a habit of picking at the mouths of coral looking for food, so that very well may be what's happening. I'm thinking I'm going to set up a 20 gallon specifically for this guy and see if I can't stop it from declining anymore, anyone think this could cause further harm?

Put it in Low flow, low lighting (by putting it on the sandbed), target feed at least once a week.

Here are some of my acanthos with a few cynarinas

Cheers,
Mr. Acantho
