Just replaced my DI resin after about 1 1/2 years. The color did not change at all compared to new resin but I figured it had gone too long and I am having some pest algae issues. My water is really good out of the tap, like 3 tds so maybe the resin was still good? Did I throw away money?
The output tds is 0 but seems like I've had an issue before where algae just started growing despite 0 tds.
tank nutrients currently nitrate 6 ppm, phosphate 0.06
main pest is cyano

DI wont last forever. but if your source water is 3 TDS I imagine it will last an incredibly long time. I would think your TDS out of the RO is already almost nonexistent. With 3 TDS source water, theres people around here that might not even bother with an RODI.

If it was color changing resin and it hadn't changed in all, i would suspect it was a bad batch.

My tap tds is 3-6 at times and mine definitely changes.

Go by your TDS meter. If it reads 0, it’s still good. If your tap TDS is 3, then the DI resin will last a long time. I have around 80 TDS from my tap. My Spectrapure DI cartridges are still producing 0 TDS and I’m approaching 2 years on them, although I’m only making about 20 gallons per week.

With a tap of 3 tds and if your RO is running at the bare minimum of 95% efficiency, you will get 25,000 to 30,000 gallons of 0 tds water out of a DI catridge.

If you were to just drop the RO part and do the pre filters and then DI, you would probably get around 1,400 gallons of 0 tds from a DI catridge.
