After a chemiclean treatment, I had to replace my carbon (charcoal) in my filter. I got a bag spec’d for a 100 gal tank (my tank is a 50) on the assumption that that if it was bigger, it would last longer.

Is this true or is the bigger bag of charcoal going to strip too much out of my water or anything like that?

No worries.
While you can have too much of anything 2x charcoal is not a big deal.
Depending on whats in the water it might or might not last longer. Pores of the charcoal get clogged and thats usually why the charcoal becomes used up.

Will not strip too much of anything. Last longer but not twice as much as if you would put only half of it in.
actually it is really hard to tell when you need to change it. I do it probably every 6 weeks

Not sure about charcoal, but I just rinsed my carbon yesterday and feels like the tank was clearer then ever.
