Canopy or lid to keep pet hair out.

So I began my first reef tank in July. Its a 40g breeder. I originally purchased a glass lid because I have 2 dogs who shed like crazy. Without a top I know this would not be good for tank. Now that I have begun having coral. I am considering how much light Im loosing through the glass.

I am considering building a canopy so I could still keep contaminates out but allow more light in.

Are there some downfalls Im mot considering?
Has anyone ever tried making a canopy but instead of having a top making it filter mess?

Some dog hair is light and can easily go airborne whereas other hair is thicker and heavier so part of the solution will depend on your pets. Have you thought of using a tight mesh lid like window screen type material? Using a glass top can be problematic because it limits the oxygen transfer at the surface of the water. Good luck with whatever you decide!
