I was just wondering if anybody has done this before? If you had two filter socks and put a small amount of carbon in each of them (rinsed) would there be any problems? Seems like a an easy to clean reactor to me. I already have a 2 little fishy reactor so this was just a thought I had while reading another post. I know the socks need cleaned fairly often so I would only add a couple tablespoons of carbon.

The problem is that the water is flowing too fast through the filter socks. Lessens the efficiency of the carbon and also can make it crumble and turn into dust depending on the amount of flow thats going through it.

+1 143gadgets. Water should flow through carbon slowly and should not bubble it. where as water should flow from phosphate such that it bubbles a little so that the phosphate media dosent solidify.

just my 2 cents

I tried this once. The carbon tumbled too much, and created too much dust.

I actually do this in my frag tanks without issue. I do put carbon in media bags then in filter sock.

After the other responses I was thinking the same thing about using a media bag. My drain is also split up so all of the flow wouldnt fall into on sock, probably around 250g in each at most.

All good points though.

I tried it packed in a media bag to prevent tumbling. The water just cascaded around the bag then. I'm sure there is a way to do this correctly, I just was too lazy to try more than twice :D
