Ask yourself why are you using the carbon, many people don’t use carbon at all and for every reason for using carbon there is probably a suitable alternative product to use.

Like the OP, I too am looking down the road at Tangs being introduced to my tank.

I just employed the use of rinsed, 0.8 ROX carbon pellets in a reactor.

Tank is fallow, and completing its cycle, but water had odor, and yellow tint. Thought carbon was a good answer, but have since stumbled on this thread, and Jay's post on HLLE (lateral line), linked below.

I plan to use ozone in connection with adding a second system to existing filtration, but before then, @Reef. do you have suggestions on friendlier ways to deal with yellow water / odor given carbon concerns?

I am using a coarse sponge, and an inline 5 micron sediment filter, it's captured a bunch of stuff, turning color. But the carbon was way more effective in a fraction of the time (only been 1 day).

What about the smell of the water?

Also how would you employ the use of a poly filter?

Seachem Purigen is definitely worth a try, very similar to carbon in its role in the tank.

UV could help with both clarity and smell but could be costly, I would see how the tank settles down first.

You mention a yellow tinge but you are just setting up the tank and cycling so probably not the normal yellow tinge water takes on after a while, so I wouldn’t rush too much trying to solve an issue that may resolve it self when the tank settles down, a solution to one issue can cause another to pop up.

At least one of the color claims (red for aluminum) makes no sense, so I personally would not rely too heavily on that info,

As a side note, previous carbon use leaves a residue in tanks, so just stopping carbon may not solve the problem.

Is this tang going in your 60? That would be much too small for a purple tang.

I use carbon for order and water clarity. I also like to use chemi pure would chemi pure cause hlle of should I just not run carbon anymore. After I remove the carbon can I still get a tang. I plan on getting tomorrow. of I can wait till December any advice?

I've not had Chemipure directly cause HLLE that I've ever noticed. I think the wet pack helps with the dust. I do rinse new packs longer than the "10 seconds" I think they recommend on the package, I rinse it with RO until the water runs clear.
