Hi,

I'm new to reefing. Today I've worked on my aquascaping and bought Caribsea live sand from the fish store. The store owner said I needed to buy 5 gallon salt water to soak the sand since i don't have my plumbing installed/return pump. Can i fill my tank up and only use my wavemaker to run in the tank for now while I figure out my plumbing situation and when I have money to purchase a new return pump? Water would only be in the main tank and nothing circulating in my sump since plumbing isn't connected.

I will be using my MP40 wavemaker to move water around and only fill my tank with salt water up to the red line shown in picture

Sure you can. Won't hurt anything. However without something alive in there it's probably not doing much.

You could get some dr. Tim's fishless cycle and start cycling the aquarium with ammonia. That takes a few weeks anyways.

Or even better would be to order a reef starter pack from ipsf. Or maybe get some rocks from someone with an established tank.

No harm in filling to the red line and running the powerhead. As noted above you could use the spare time to cycle the tank.

If you don’t have an RODI unit I would rank that high on the priority list. It will pay for itself in the long run.

Dr. Tim is probably a good ideal :) Do I need my tank to cycle first before buying the reef starter pack?

You can buy some necessarily have to. The amphipods and stuff that you typically get don't require it. Usually they send along with it some sand from their systems, and some stuff from their filters. This helps jumpstart the ecological balance in the tank.
