I just bought the Dyson Animal 2 and I can't believe the suction on this thing. We have area rugs and wood floors and this transitions from one to the other easily. Build quality is what you'd expect from something in this price range and my only complaint with the vacuum is the extension hose to reach the high spots is stiff and takes some muscle to extend. We still kept the old Shark vacuum because it's lighter and comes in handy for quick clean ups.

The real reason we bought the Dyson was because of this guy in the house.

I've seen his videos too - impressive how he's already found his calling!

I actually think the Kirby is awesome - but the sales method is horrible. Find a good used one and avoid their sales force.

We have a Dyson that is awful - but it was a lower end model. Can't speak for the top dollar ones. Everything about ours feels cheap and the suction really isn't anything special.

The important feature for carpet is a good agitating brush head driven by a motor and not just a stupid air turbine.

I love my Dysons. We have a larger regular plug in one that is great but the hose attachment is a bit stiff to work with and we have one of their cordless ones which is what we use most of the time. Even with 2 dogs and 2 cats the Dyson keeps up.

If you want the best cleaning power/agitation and can handle something on the largish size (still fairly agile and light), the Miele Dynamic U1 uprights. The canisters don't match up and neither do cheaper models (they'll blow Kirby's away). You don't need the cat and dog version unless you need the attachments (all versions have the same agitation and suction power). Clean out the agitator periodically and replace bags when needed, it'll outlast that Kirby too). Do some research on them and you'll see what I mean. If you don't need something 'upscale/powerful', I agree with the Shark suggestion since most vacuums under ~250 perform about the same and will last about the same amount of time... no need to go all the way to the top of that range or even the big fancy Dysons (reliability issues.... if you must, get it from Costco so at least they'll replace it when it breaks and you won't have to pay a repair bill)

I use Dyson Cyclone V10, This Dyson vacuum is a wonderful piece of technological kit... with a flaw that would not allow me to give it 5 stars. As a lot of people have stated, it in no way will give 60 minutes at full power setting. But wait... this is not the flaw... the flaw is that the batteries are sealed into the head and you can not buy spare batteries to keep on trucking!

Totally agree 120% At the price they charge a swappable battery should come standard, especially since they stopped making corded vacuums. It makes me wonder if someone owns the patient on replaceable batteries in vacuums. Shark seems to be the only one that makes them.

Thanks everyone We have a Electrolux canister vacuum it is a great vacuum problem is we lost the piece that holds the bag in the vacuum so we can not use it. It seems every machine has a special part only for that gen.

There are vacume repair shops (they are not a myth) they will order and get the peice you need. It is an electeolux, they nake replacement parts for everything, give them a call.

What you need is a Proteam Back Pack. Get the hardwood floor tool if you have wood or concrete floors. It has the most powerful motor in the industry. It is a very simple design. Most the filtering is done before the motor so no dirt passes thru the motor. The final filters after the motor are hepa. The first paper bag filter can be emptied and reused many times. The second cloth bag never wears out.
It is a commercial vac so its gona cost you. It is not cheap plastic or heavy metal. Made for some abuse. made for people that clean office buildings ect.... It does cost a bit but you will never break the thing unless you suck up water then a new motor will be needed.

I would like to thank everyone that contributed to this thread, I looked at every vacuum that was posted, did my research, watch you tube videos and in the end my wife made the decision and she choose a Dyson Ball. I hate to throw away the Electrolux, so I will find an authorized repair shop. I hope people can still use this thread in the future lots of great information.

Update time, the Dyson Ball started to suck in a bad way. So the old saying Buy Once Cry Once, so I bought another vacuum cleaner this time a Miele C3 canister unit. It is a HEPA unit. So far it is great.
