Catching fish

Coming back to this one for anyone who finds it later with the same problem. The pattern in this thread, where every fish goes in the trap except the one you actually need, comes up a lot with angels, tangs and other fish that stick close to the rockwork. Leaving the trap in longer rarely changes their mind, and when the scape took ages to get right, pulling the rock apart isn’t a great fallback either.

Happy to share a guide I put together on catching fish in a reef tank without pulling the rock apart. It compares nets, traps, shrinking the space and shelter-based methods, with specific notes on fish that ignore traps, like the angel above. Hope this helps!

I had to catch a tomini tang once in a very established reef. If the tank is small enough (75g or less) I remove a lot of the water into a brute can. When the water is only a few inches deep then it is easier to capture the targeted fish.

Just had great luck getting a scopas out of my reef.

Feed them to get him in the open, switch the lights to only red and they won’t be able to react. Net him slowly
