Hi folks, I just wanted to share an experience I just had using Flourish and Excel. I have used both of these products in my tank systems in the past to encourage macroalgae growth. I never noticed a problem but now I have an AIO system and dosed straight into the display. Also the bottle of Excel was old and perhaps more concentrated making the dose higher than normal. Finally I dosed immediately after a water change when oxygen levels in the tank may have been lowered.
I noticed the tank was staying cloudy longer than I would have expected but I shrugged it off. However as the lights were going down my blue eyed kole tang began going to surface it seemed to get air. I know from servicing other folks tanks that tangs are the first to die of oxygen deprivation so I was concerned. I have an AquaClear filter and since I did not fill the tank up as full the AC was cascading the water back in and falling further than usual. I was hoping this would help an oxygen situation. I went to bed with misgivings but not knowing what else to do.
This morning the tank was all cleared up and fish emerged one by one, all except Blondie, the tang. Now I was feeling sick so I googled Flourish and Excel to see if that could be the problem. Turns out that those products definitely can deplete oxygen and need to be used carefully. I am glad I learned that. Blondie did emerge an hour or so after everyone else and she looks fine but I will be very careful in the future to not overdose and to not use it right after a water change. Hopefully no one else makes the mistake I did.
