So I have an avatar chalice that is about 3 " across now. Had him about a month and he's growing nicely, about 5 new eyes since I've had him.

Originally I had him on a rock about 3" off of the sand bed, and he seems fine there but I wanted to give him more room so I placed him on the sand bed, same approximate light and water flow.

When he's up on the rock he plumps up like Angelinas lips, but unexpected he's on the sand bed he thins out around the edges. The edges are not touching the sand bed on the bottom so I know it's not irritated, but I'm not sure which is the healthier look, plumped or thin.

I don't want to leave him on the bottom if he doesn't like it there, but it gives him more growth room in the long term.

Anyone know if plump or thin is the healthier sign for a chalice?

There might be just enough difference in flow/light to make it react that way. With chalice I've learned to leave them be when there happy or acclimated to a spot in the tank. As far as more room to grow, I get it. That chalice will grow regardless though, especially mycedium. Fast and aggressive grower IME.

Question is which is a healthier sign? Plumped or thinner (not sickly thin, it doesn't look stressed anyway) ? Color doesn't change, just texture.

I've always viewed puffy in mycedium as healthy and happy. It's the only species that looked like that all the time versus others like oxypora just while feeding. Can you post a pic of the chalice in both areas.
