Think I know what’s going on here, but just want to be sure before I make any assumptions.

I have 3x chalk bass in my display. All 3 use to be out and active constantly. The largest and the smallest have since taken refuge in the rock pile on the left side of my tank. The largest only comes out for food, smallest just occasionally pops out and has changed color to a dingy brown. Seems to have gotten a bit skinnier as well, understandably.

I added a tang to my display and same thing happened. There is no aggression between the bass and tang but the bass are now hiding most of the time and only coming out to feed, big color change at times. They are still fat as pigs so Im not worried, but do miss seeing them out more. I have two in a 180, strange.

... what is the assumption, if i may ask?

Chalk Bass change sexes often, multiple times a day in the wild. I’ve also read that they mate for life. Being it’s the largest and the smallest, I’m assuming this is taking place.

It did start after I added the last fish, that may have something to do with it.

Is the tang exhibiting any sort of aggression? I haven’t seen any from the bandit, though I haven’t really been looking for it.

Nope none at all to the bass.
