I am changing tanks and moving everything from one tank to another. Should I replace the substrate with new sand or move the old sand over?

I just transferred from my 56g with a 30g sump to a 75g with a canister filter. I used my old sand but I did rinse it good with tap water until the worst of the dirt and gunk was washed out it. The transfer went well.

Be cautious using the old substrate. When you remove the old substrate, it will release all detritus/food remnants/lost livestock remains/ etc which could cause a spike in ammonia and toxins which could be harmful when starting new tank. It’s not as simple as “swap out old substrate to new system” as it may seem. Good luck with new system!
