Ok guys I think I’ve finally got my ozone how I’m gonna keep it. I’ve run ozone every which way in my tank. Avast reactor, skimmer, even Randy’s diy 50 foot tubing reactor idea. First I’ll explain why I ditched those.

Avast reactor is simply massive. Too much room taken. If you have unlimited space, go for it.

Skimmate is effected too much imo by running ozone through a skimmer.

Tubing reactor again was too much space and unwieldy.

So what do I have now? I simply run a BRS reactor with K1 media. The ozone is injected via a Venturi off of some Sicce pump I had laying around. I’ll try to link it on Amazon. I then run the effluent water through a brs mini reactor with rox carbon.

Is this the most efficient way to do it? Probably not. Using a taller canister or one of BRS jumbo reactors probably would yield much more contact time/aeration.

Does it work? I noticed an uptick in my ORP as soon as I started running it.

Do you need an air pump? I don’t think so. I think if you really wanted to dial it in you could use an air pump with a valve to dial in the air flow. I tried it on full blast with no valve and it pushed too much ozone out of the reactor. I was getting ozone smell. With just the passive Venturi I haven’t had ozone smell at all.

So far so good. Seen a steady uptick in ORP since I got it running and zero smell of ozone. I'm sure it's nowhere near as efficient as a geo or avast reactor, but it's been my experience that you really don't need much ozone to get the clarifying effect that people are wanting from it. It's been a great, easy solution for me. And it's nice for hobbyists because if they are like me, they probably have some old BRS reactors laying around anyway.

how exactly does it work? I was looking to buy avast ozone but this might be better?

I would almost guarantee this one isn’t “better” but it’s a lot cheaper. Works on same basic principle most of them do. Ozone air is injected and the water is poured over plastic material to help mix it with ozone. It clarifies water all the same.

I have the Avast reactor and ran it for 1 year. I run ozone through my skimmer again running a lower setting with as good results, imo.
I run 2 9430 skimmers on my 150.
The first has ozone and the second is in the return chamber.
The ozone skimmers skim is darker and thicker than no ozone.

The reactor is overkill, imo, for my system. They are nice but they do take up alot of space and require alot of carbon.

Running ozone through my skimmer is very cost effective vs the reactor method, imo.

Any updates?

Seems to be working fine as far as I can tell. One of those things that's hard to quantify. My water is really clear and I don't run carbon lol. only thing I've run into is that I was letting the venturi pull the air by itself for a while and ran into an issue where somehow the check valve or whatever in the venturi didn't work and water got pushed through the air input and I had a leak out of the ozone unit. Since then I've hooked up up an air pump into the venturi with a needle valve to adjust it and that's worked well.
