chemi pure carbon

i have carbon running right now and say if i were to remove it and then could i get a tang and not get hlle

I still think we need a like button for "interesting".

I'm tagging along here, I'm not an expert in fish disease, Tangs or otherwise, but my suspicion is a firm maybe lol! Many reefers like to use Chemi-Pure, so I'd like to say it's safe. But my very limited understanding is that it's the carbon "dust" that gets into the system that causes HLLE. I'm thinking some carbons may indeed be better than others, but perhaps all should be pre-rinsed and not allowed to tumble in a media bag or reactor.

Here's a thread discussing this with some good replies, including post #4 from Randy Holmes-Farley (a long time reefer, and professional chemist):

That post mirrors my study - ROX and pelleted carbon, as well as Chemi-Pure does not cause the severe HLLE that soft lignite carbon does. We did see some microscopic HLLE in fish taken from water with pelleted carbon, but it wasn't visible to the naked eye.

That said, yellow tangs show HLLE differently than most other fish - they remain yellow, but their fins develop a sort of scalloped, eroded look.
