Chemiclean question

Is there any harm in waiting 72 hours before performing a water change and replacing carbon after introducing Chemiclean as long as the tank is staying well oxygenated? The instructions say 48 hours. I can do that. It just happens to be inconvenient.

Im not sure a 20% water change does much, and waiting seems fine. I did not change much more than my usual 1% daily. Remember, if a water change is supposed to remove something bad, a 20% change is leaving 80% of it in the water.

Good point. And, yeah, I hate to admit it but sometimes my tank may be less than perfect.

Last time I did a Chemiclean treatment I waited 72 hours and did the recommend waterchange. My skimmer still foamed pretty aggressively for about 4 hours after the water change. I changed out the cup about 4 times during that period. Everything went great btw.

did you deal with issues post chemi clean? how is your biome doing?

I’m at my wits end and thinking of hitting it tomorrow and monday doing the bigger WC

It got rid of the red cyano no problem, but that's been quickly replaced in less than a week with green on the substrate. Nothing the conchs or other snails seem to want to eat. I'm thinking about hitting it again before my next water change this week.

I really can't say since I haven't put it under a microscope (and I'm not sure I'd know the difference even if I did), but I'm leaning towards green cyano simply because its distribution is so similar to the red. It's not slimy or bubbly but that isn't to say it couldn't become so if I let it go unchecked.

If it blows off easily it is likely cyano.

I would have been embarrassed to post that before I cleaned up the red cyano. Worse than my tank looked.

so i w pulled the trigger today and removed as much cyano as i could (or that i wanted to without losing my mind). Then i mixed up chemi clean according to the directions. Man that stuff is foamy and skimmer immediately overflowed. I had to move my ato sensors due to the bubbles from skimmer. Of course, i expected it based on everyone’s feedback. MP40’s are being turned up even at night so i have even more o2 exchange.

I am nervous. I don’t like the idea of antibiotics in a system that depends on bacteria. But, if it is endorsed by most OG reefers (not all) then i am willing to do it. The name is stupid and it should be marketing under a more professional name. “Chemi clean” just sounds terrible and cheap, lol.

Agreed, about as good a name as Tidy Bowl for an aquarium. Don't sweat it. Keep the air blasting and a close eye on your skimmer and livestock and you'll be fine.
