How much would you say it cost extra a month on the electric bill?@twilliard
Oh man I cant remember I have a kill a watt meter on it and runs during the summer.
It wasnt much!
I fire it up once a month to keep the compressor cycled and would have to check the next time I do that.
Me being an hvac controls tech can say not much to fail on these. 1 start stop relay :-) no electronics

Hold on fellow neighboring state.
No one has asked for compressor size so how can we deny the fact that it does work for right now?
Is the evaporator fan forced?
Whats the HP?
Cant make that statement without knowing the facts.

Dorm friges don't come with chiller sized compressors. So I call BS. I have been seeing these types of posts for years. Maybe this frig is from outer space. I still call BS.

I have to agree on this one. If you modded a dorm fridge, than that's not really proving a dorm fridge works..... that's actually proving it doesn't, because it requires mods. I mean no disrespect.

With all the info given I still think the dorm fridge method could be a good option for a pico sized tank, depending on the circumstances of course. If you wind enough tubing in the fridge you could end up with a good amount of chilled water to help get you through a few peak high temperature hours. This is assuming that the tank is at an acceptable temperature at night giving the fridge a chance to cool the water stored inside the tubing.

I have to agree with windy.
I've seen these occasional claims for a couple decades and they are just that claims with no substance.
I helped a guy back in approx. 1990 try and cool his 180 with a dorm sized fridge and it didn't work at all.

Plus if it did work, controlling would be another issue.
