chiton death

I was really bummed to find my chiton dead this morning. I am guessing he starved. Does anyone know what chitons eat? Algae no doubt but certain kinds? How long do they tend to live. I only have one other snail and 3 hermits in my 29 gallon. I scrape the glass weekly. Should it have starved?

Most are herbivores though some and carnivores. They eat bryozoans, algae, diatoms and barnacles. Some eat bacteria, inverts and small fish if they can catch them.
