I think closed loop is still king from an aesthetic point of view, however, I have moved away from it in favor of more efficient, DC power heads out of concern for energy, use, electricity costs, etc.

But in my opinion, some of the nicest tanks ever are or were running on closed loops dumping back in the tank on sea swirls

The closed loop design that Sanjay shows in this video I think it’s the best I have ever seen, it is shown with older iwaki air cooled AC pumps, but I could easily envision something like this working with an external mounted DC pump like an eco tech vectra

Closed loop discussion at circa 4:00

I was in the process of putting together a barebottom frag tank with two closed loops using the Synca SDC 6.0 wifi pumps. Intake to each pump and two returns. One high on one side and one low on the other side. The pumps would alternate high/low flow so the water would circulate in one direction for a short while and then reverse direction as the pumps alternated back and forth. Have all the parts just haven't finished the project..

It would be great to hear how those pumps wind up performing for this purpose
