I have a clown trigger thats about 6" long in a tank with just live rock and a sand base. I was curious if I could put a sand sifting goby or something else in the tank to help keep it clean. I obviously cant use snails or crabs because those are little snacks to him.

I've had the same problem with the same size and type of fish and every fish smaller then itself was a snack. I kept my sand clean by siphoning it when doing water changes.

Doesn't the siphon remove the sand from the tank?
If you use a siphon designed for substrate instead of just a hose and take your time you should only loose a tiny bit of sand. By using your thumb on the output side of the siphon you can control flow and remove more waste and less sand.
