I am new to the hobby and set up my first tank almost a month ago. I’ve got a 40 gallon aio cube. I used live rock and live sand to start things off and added a couple small clowns about 2 weeks ago. Today I decided I wanted to add a couple more fish and went with a yellow clown goby and a 6 lime wrasse (was looking for a royal gramma, but none in stock).

Made a rookie mistake of not doing any research. Sounds like I’m pretty screwed with the 6 line wrasse. Do I give it time and see if it works out or just get it out of the tank sooner rather than later.

All fish in the tank are juvenile with the exception of the goby. Nothing is over 1.5”. The smallest fish is the goby at about 1” the wrasse is about 1.25 and the clowns are about 1.5

I plan on adding more rock structure in the next week or so.

Some other fish I plan on adding are a watchman goby/shrimp combo and hoping to add something else with some more color.

Pics and videos of the set up included for reference

In over 20 years I’ve had a sixline for most of it and have never had a problem with any of them. I have one currently, it’s great!

I wish I could get a six-line wrasse to work in my tank. I added one a year or so ago and I never saw him after the fight night! I assume my other fish bullied it into oblivion. My tank is typically quite peaceful but next time I will intro the six-line in a more gradual manner (ie, with an isolation for a week or two). I thought the Six-Line would be able to hold its own or hide in the extensive rockwork but I was wrong.

What makes you think you are screwed with the 6 line? Any fish can turn out to be a bully or not.

Personally I would make getting more rock the priority over adding more fish. It’s very hard to get a size perspective from the picture, if those rocks are boulders it might be better to break them up into smaller pieces. Needs more rock to create some nooks and crannies and caves, each fish needs his own little spot to hide.

They are large. I do plan on changing things around in there and will likely break the larger 2 rocks on the sides.

Agreed. @Brainrad22 your tank greatly benefit from more caves, overhangs, etc. which serve as hiding spots for the fish. This will decrease the risk of fish aggression significantly. All the fish need their own spot to sleep in at night as well as places to hide when they want to get away from the other inhabitants.

This might be a really stupid question, but where do I find different sizes and shapes? Any online recs? All of the local shops I go to generally have just large chunks.

I would highly recommend live rock from the ocean from TBS. Let them know what you are looking for.

Wow. That looks awesome. Would it cause any issues to replace the live rock I have in the tank with this now that the tank is up and running.

No, you’re good to go! Just add to it.

Nope! It would only benefit your tank due to adding an increase in your tank's biodiversity
