Clownfish breeding setup

Hello again all,

This is my second question on breeding clownfish. I am looking for a relatively (for saltwater) inexpensive, DIY type breeding setup for clownfish.

I am looking to breed ocellaris/percula clownfish so am looking for any help you can give on the setup. Please make this as detailed as possible and include pics of you have any. I have never set anything up like this before and will need it on the beginner level. Please include details about each tank needed and used (broodstock, fry, growout, sump-including # and size of chambers, etc) including sizes and any equipment used in each tank. Please include your racks and how you made/organized them. Please include the plumbing used for each tank. I would like to use one sump for all tanks but have only ever used a sump on one tank before so need help figuring this out.

One of my jobs here at Reef2Reef is to welcome new members. So let me start by saying 'WELCOME".



Now comes the part that is hard for me to say and may be hard for you to hear:

You state that you have never tried anything like this before. And you just joined Reef2Reef today and have just 2 posts. So I have to ask, do you have any experience keeping any saltwater aquariums? If so, telling us about your experience level will be a huge help.

The following statement is assuming you have no saltwater experience or are new to the hobby:

Trying to breed clown and having no saltwater aquarium experience is, IMHO, a fools errand. I don't mean to be rude or harsh, but lots of reefers with lots of experience have tried getting into breeding clowns and even most of them fail. I'm discouraging you from trying as much for the health and well being of the clownfish as I am over your potential failure.

If you have had substantial success keeping a saltwater tank for more than a year (at least), I'll say you have a chance and I'm sure some here will be happy to help you. But knowing your experience level will certainly put others like me more at ease.

Hello all,

Yes, I was working on introducing myself and sharing a little experience when I got your messages.

I have done saltwater for about 5 years and also have done freshwater for many years (since I was a kid). I do have experience with successful saltwater tanks and would certainly never try anything like this without that experience. I also have some successful breeding experience with freshwater community fish and cichlids.
