Coldwater tanks/room temperature tanks

Has anyone else done this? My first room temperature reef tank is at around day 100 with no heater or chiller, only problem has been a diatom boom, it has 4 different species of anemone that I collected with a plankton net. I do want beadlets but can’t find any sellers of them in the US.

There is a certain standard way of keeping a reef tank. Most of us try our best to follow this method for success. If you want to stray from the norm, that is cool but very few people can help when things get tough. I would love to see your tank

it was to deal with high prices, I have a beach near my house so I went out and got some seawater and plankton and waited to see what took off

Figured out this is a plumeose anemone!
Pretty rare deeper sea guys that get big.

Ah it was a while ago that I had this
Tragically it came to an end when my mother came over and drained it
(She didn’t like it in her room, so she… moved it)
But regardless of past tragedies, it had no chiller and was around room temperature.

I should also mention that it came to clear up and become much more beautiful before it ended
I even got some coralliformes

Im sorry to hear that happened to your tank, but it'sa really cool tank though! I also had no idea that coldwater species like that plumose may even thrive at room temperatures (no heater or chiller)

If you look up for your area it will give you the sea temperature month to month. I find 60f is a perfect temp for growing sea weeds and other micro algae and higher it just rots . Feed plenty of nitrate or ammonia dosing feeds them . Because your micro algae will bottom out your nitrate

Generally the ones in shallow water should be fine, if you look at the maps of websites like I-naturalist, you can find the range of certain species, and if they live in temperate shallow waters it should be fine for them at room temperature, for example the giant green sea anemone should do fine, though I would also recommend the strawberry coralliforme, they’re a very prolific and hardy species, but they’re relatively hard to come by, you would need access to a specialized public aquarium or seller (of which, there are very few) to get them if you don’t want to collect them from the wild. If you do collect them, the best way would be to aquaculture some rocks in the sea for about a year or two, which should be enough time for life to grow
