So would would be a good fish for a 30g cube that swims out in the open and is vibrantly colored. Would like it to be peaceful if possible.

Check out any of the ORA dottybacks. Many beautiful colors and you can buy several and they'll school for you.

I really want to do a dottyback but I hear they can be jerks. I have a gold assessor and they are very similar so I would worry that they would fight.

Hmm that could be a possibility. I guess you really dont know until you get them in the tank. You could always try an acclimation box to see. The pajama cardinals are cool and they hang out in the water column. Have you thought about wrasses? I had a carpenters flasher wrasse that was beautifully colored. He got along well with a royal gramma basslet that he shared the tank with.

Some others...

Any of the dartfish
some hogfish have cool colors

I love that fish and I might go with one, I was really wanting to get a captive bred fish...but that only really leaves clowns or dottybacks lol

I don't know what your price range is, and these guys don't swim about in the water column, and they are VERY small, but I just added a couple griessingeri gobies to my refugium. They are absolutely stunning

Not all dottybacks are evil, the orchid dottybacks I have had over the years are very passive and docile. (And beautiful)
