Concerning ICP results

Hello reefers,

I have been at it for 3 full years now. My 75gal display +29g sump has improved greatly but still deal with problems keeping LPS and SPS alive. Ive had luck with my gsp, pulsing xenia, leather/toadstool and an anemone. I have had all of the algae, using chemiclean to clear up the mating green cyano works but looking to get rid of the pest.

I got an ICP test back in December and have received the results. See attached.
Aquarium is pretty heavily stocked with fish, some inverts like sand sifting star and a conch as well as pistol shrimp and variety of snails.

PO4 has always read low in my tank, nitrates with titration is always 50+ but i got a Hanna reader and can get a closer read around 16 pretty consistently.

Molybdenum is high and will be looking for the source, first thought is i may be my fritz rpm blue box.

I don't know that the molybdenum is high enough to be a problem. Maybe.

You might benefit from a trace element supplement (or not).

I'd feed more or dose phosphate.

Low: Sulfur, Sulfate and Iodine

High: Aluminum at 33

I was looking into the all for reef and supplements that are suggested with it but cannot come around to spend the money on it.

I have been increasing my mysis and brine shrimp feeds and adding reef roids to them to try to increase my phosphates. Hoping that my clean up crew can keep the detritus in check and minimize the amount my nitrates creep up.

I’d like to keep my tank as easy as possible without to much going into it.

Iodine is very low, that low is not good for some corals according to my experience (not scientifically proven ). This is one of the few eceptions where I believe adding traces may benefit some.
Po4 is low but not dangerious low, as long as you feed the corals with organic food. Molybden I agree with Randy, its high but not super high, so I don not think thats a problem.

If you dont have any obvious issues with the tank I would do nothing more than dosing Iodine.

I would suggest to take a look at the lighting.... IME corals not growing is more often related to low lighting than to parameters, I mean there is nothing in your parameters that make me think its a parameters issue. If you can post pictures of the affected corals and your tank and give some details on your lighting and flow, it will help us more.

The issues I have are the algae growth that requires manual removal and the use of chemiclean(this helps keep the corals alive by keeping the green matting cyano off the rocks). I feel that the hair algae growth is a side affect of the chemiclean or lack of cyano.

I will look into getting some iodine int the tank. More likely to try something that has a bunch of trace elements in it that would benefit according to my ICP test.

I have two radions xr15 on at 10am on to 10pm off light cycle at 25%. The lights are about 8” above the water line.The sump light is on for like 18 hours of a day. Off for a few hours during the day time.


Flow is 100% from the return. I direct the Tunze power head from the bottom of the tank up to the return which appears to make a randomized flow around the tank.

You're running your lights at 25%? I never had radions so I don't know, but I would suggest to dig into this further. There are lots of threads on here about xr15's, you can even start a new thread to get better feedback on your lighting and tank specifically, lots of folks will give you good feedback. Personally I like high lighting and my corals grow like weeds. To me everything looks good on your system, ya maybe you can tweek a parameter here or there, but even a chemist mentioned nothing of concern. Flow sounds good too. To me it just points towards lighting. Just my 2 cents, good luck.

So light intensity may be something to tweak.

I also have algae and unfortunately when corals grow, algae also tends to grows…

I manually remove what I can, not a fan of chemiclean or other similar products.

I was using around 55% intensity with a AB+ provided template. I found that the high light intensity was a source of the red and green cyano forming on my sand and rocks. That is the major reason i have lowered it this far. Its been a couple months like this and i haven't seen any major changes in the corals but again I used some chemiclean to make that tank look nice and clean for the holidays. Ill give it another month or two and see if the lighting has much affect on the cyano forming.

Radeons on 25% might be good for zoas, but definitely not for SPS, you really need to rump them up. Try to borrow PAR meter.
