ICP results - recommended products

Hi all,

I’m looking to run my first ICP test and I’ve read good reviews about
The Oceamo ICP, hence will potentially go this route. Looks like one of of their main providers/seller in the US is Reef Moonshiner’s.

My question is, can I use reef moonshiners products to correct any potential deficiency flagged in the ICP in conjunction with a different dosing method, such as Reef Pro AB(what I currently dose)?

For example, let’s say my ICP results return low in Manganese (random example) can I purchase manganese from Moonshine and use their dosing calculations / recommendations from the Oceamo test while using Reef Pro AB? Would this overdose my tank somehow?

Yes, the elements from the various reefing product companies can be used to dose a tank regardless of where what ICP test you use. For elements, look into the Captiv8 line. They sell very concentrated solutions with very clear dosing instructions. Once you get you ICP results back you can use one of the free AI bots like Claude or ChatGPT to calculate the dosing. For example, here is the prompt I used to make an iodine level correction:

“The iodine level in my reef tank is reported as 23.82 µg/l. How much iodine concentrate do I need to dose to a 125 gallon system where the concentrate states “1 mL per 26.4 gallons (100 L) increases by 1.00 ppm”

You can dose everything separately, thats how moonshiners works.

How old is your tank and do you have much experience with reefing in the past ?

Not having much experience in the reefing hobby and "chasing #s" can go south really quick.

For most trace elements, you can diy without buying a commercial product. I also do not agree with all moonshine recommendations as some are just not justified, IMO.

I'd see what Oceamo shows before worrying about what brands to use to make any corrections.

Not having much experience in the reefing hobby and "chasing #s" can go south really quick.

Tank is ~4 years old, been in the hobby for ~2+ years. I agree with chasing the numbers logic, but I’m not chasing, I just want to simply test and correct as needed.

Thank you! Do you have articles that covers these DIY? Like a general article I could refer to? Also as many refers, I get pretty busy with life balance, hence why sometimes buying comercial products may be efficient for us. That said, would you recommend a different commercial product?

As to commercial supplements, I think that Trooic Marine A and K will generally give as good results as dosing a dozen things independently. It is not true that most trace elements need some exact level to be perfect. There is often a very wide window of suitability, and ICP doesn’t tell the full story as it cannot identify the chemical form of the elements, which can greatly impact toxicity and bioavailability.
