Converting wet/dry sump

Hello everyone
i am looking to use this sump on a new setup that I have in the works and in my build thread it was suggested not to run it as a wet/dry style filter. What would be my beat bet to convert this or am I better off going to a diy breeder set up? The tank is a 90gallon reef build

You can definitely work with that sump.

I would remove the egg crate and fill that chamber with live rock. Be sure your water level covers the live rock.

Awesome thanks for the advice! Can I still use the filter batting rather than socks? What is the drawbacks to not converting to filter socks?

If the far left is a sock chamber the bio ball area would be a good place for a refugium.

I don’t believe you can get in the far left chamber. That chamber filled up and then flowed water over into the tray above the bio balls. Unless you think that is something I should cut out

Here's an idea. Use some cheap crate as a shelf then put filter floss, pad, etc on top of that. You could use pvc as legs or just create an egg crate stand like a frag system. Then turn the bio ball area into a refugium or skimmer area.

I got a wet dry with a 120 gallon tank I found for sale locally. I figured I’d use it for my fish holding system in the fish room I’m building. My idea was to toss the plastic balls and use Matala mesh and MarinePur

I had one of those Wet/Dry units on my 90gal and when I went to convert my FOWLR to have corals. The challenge I had was that while the return section was fine, the other main section didn't really fit a skimmer very well...and when I had one in there, the water level would change quite a bit since there isn't a baffle setting the water height (even with an ATO). I ended up with a 20gal that I put in my own baffles.

If you are going to run an external skimmer then I guess there isn't an issue with the water height.

I’ve got my old Aqua-C Remora skimmer that can hang on the side. I’ll just need to replace the Mag3 pump that died.
