Hey All,
The Short: I'm starting my aquaculture business to reduce the amount of coral i need to pull from the ocean while simultaneously putting beautiful coral into the hands of the hobbyists. I am currently working on plumbing up a 750g environment - comprised of various sized tanks (both frag and display) and a large central sump system (made mainly from rubbermaid stock tanks). I look forward to posting pictures of my current setup, progress pictures as it grows, and beautiful shots of the coral colonies & frags that I acquire. Thank you for following!
The Long:
About a year ago I started acquiring & trading for coral, in hopes to open up my own at home aquaculture business. I'm not looking to light the world on fire with sales, but instead have a different mission statement:
To provide a thriving and sustainable environment where coral can propagate in order to reduce the amount of coral being harvested from our natural reefs.
My logic is, if I can obtain coral from other hobbyists & coral companies and grow it out in a sustainable environment, I can sell it at highly competitive prices. I understand every business model is different, but some companies are just importing-chopping-and selling. That might be fine but that requires new coral to constantly be imported from the natural reef and also ultimately putting the lifespan of the coral in the hands of whoever will hand you the most money. I hope that by investing the time to grow out the coral, I can ultimately reduce the amount of times I need to "pull from the ocean" in order to keep my business afloat (see what i did there?)
I will continue to post photos of the system, the coral frags, the coral colonies, the fish, and my progress as a start up coral aquaculture business.
