Coral parameters

Do you guys mostly follow the parameters posted from BRS when trying to maintain for corals.

Would this be your order of importance? If not, what do you find is the main thing, if kept stable, determines if your corals thrive?


And are you feeding your corals directly or letting them feed off whatever’s in the water column?

I'm going to say salinity, because when your salinity fluctuates it takes other parameters with it.

As far as that chart, I think that is assuming you're are talking about SPS. I believe the nitrate and phosphate can go a little higher if you're keeping softies, for example.

I'm sure others will offer their take here too :-)

These are pretty standard guidelines you will find on most any website.

The only parameter I check (and adjust if needed) with any real regularity is alkalinity. I spot check others and as long as they are within range its good.

I received this email today and was about to post about it moments ago…haha.

What I find interesting is po4 and no3 recommendations that many here would describe as “old school” or a potential for problems including nuisance dinoflagellates. Imo, these nutrients numbers are ideal. I would prefer no3 0 to 5 on Salifert but believe 1 to 10 is fine also.

Anyone else want to comment here? I believe most softy tanks could run at slightly higher nitrate and phosphate, and indeed may benefit from that environment. What do you guys think?
