Ok so yestarday i added 15 ml of nitrifying bacteria inside my 20 gallon. The bottle with the bacteria inside smells strangely like alcohol. Is this normal? Also my toadstool didn't let out its tentacles for the whole day. Should i do a water change? The clownfish and shrimp seem to be doing OK and so is my xenia.

you won't recognize it even if i told you, its made by a Chinese company. But i just want to make sure the acholic smell is normal right?
Live bacteria can have several smells, if you suspect that there was a carbon content to the vessel you may need to look at two aspects.

1. did you observe a decrease in nutrients
2. Does the bottle has a recommendation of ml per gallon.

An unrecognizable Chinese off brand of bacteria that didn't smell right, hmm. I think you already have your answer. Why go with an off brand when there are so many other options that aren't that expensive?

R2R is a fairly large platform with members from all over the world including china, most country’s will have there own brands.

is tank cycled? why would you add nitrifying bacteria? Especially from a bottle made in China that smells funny?

If its suspicious, I would do water changes and run activated carbon.
