I've seen more and more LFS's and vendors place their corals on egg crate, even for corals that are traditionally suggested to be placed on sand bed (namely: elegance, plate/fungia). They appear to do fine on egg crate at the stores and I'm consider doing that myself...

I do think placing them on egg crate, above the sand, may be more beneficial as the corals would get less irritation from the sand. I couldn't find much info on this but wanted to ask you guys because, like i said, the stores seem to be placing them on egg crates.

Vendors and fish stores I believe do this mainly because 1) they are selling these items (usually a display tank R a store would have them on the sand or on the rock…if a bare bottom display then directly on the glass bottom) 2) egg creat is great for holding a frag plug and makes it easier to remove

I sometime use a small rock to glue a frag plug to to keep certain corals from being directly on the sand. I wouldn’t use egg create in my DT to hold corals

You can set up your tank however you like
